SS Orion is a historic steamship located at Söder Mälarstrand in Stockholm. Built in 1929, it is notable for being Sweden's last steam-powered salvage vessel. The ship was operated by the Royal Pilotage Authority and features a variety of functional spaces, including seven cabins, two lounges, three mess rooms, a galley, a shower room, and a cargo hold. It is equipped with a coal-fired boiler and seven operational steam engines, along with well-maintained machinery such as generators and winches.
The vessel is recognized for its cultural and historical significance, reflecting the maritime heritage of Sweden. SS Orion offers guided tours and educational youth programs, providing visitors with insights into its operational history and the technology of steam power. The ship is managed by Captain Bo Thorstenson, who oversees its preservation and public engagement efforts. Free entry is available on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 PM to 3 PM, allowing the public to explore this unique piece of maritime history.
