How does recycling work in Sweden?
What households sort, who collects it, what happens to deposit cans and how much is recycled.
Short answer
Swedish households sort food waste, packaging of paper, plastic, metal and glass, and residual waste, and municipalities must offer collection from the property by 1 January 2027. Deposit cans and bottles go to deposit machines. In 2024, 23 percent of household waste went to material recycling and 55 percent to energy recovery, according to Avfall Sverige.
Why
- According to Naturvårdsverket, municipalities have been responsible for collecting household packaging waste since 1 January 2024, and by 1 January 2027 they must offer property-close collection of paper, plastic, metal and coloured and uncoloured glass.
- According to Stockholm Vatten och Avfall, sorting out packaging is mandatory, and in Stockholm everyone must sort out food waste.
- According to Avfall Sverige, 23 percent of household waste went to material recycling in 2024, and energy recovery accounted for 55 percent of treatment.
Details
The Sopor.nu sorting guide lists categories such as packaging, hazardous waste, electronic waste, batteries, newspapers, food waste, textiles, garden waste, bulky waste and residual waste. In Stockholm, sorted food waste becomes biofertiliser and biogas, and residents in buildings with green bags get bag holders and bags from the property owner. For local recycling points see waste and recycling services in Stockholm, and for other building rules see how late you can drill or do DIY in an apartment.
Tip
Ask your landlord or host how sorting works in your building, and use the station search on Sopor.nu to find the nearest recycling station.
What may differ
Collection varies by municipality and by building. Naturvårdsverket says the 2027 deadline for property-close collection applies to all municipalities, and Stockholm Vatten och Avfall says the property owner is responsible for arranging packaging collection.
