What is the highest temperature ever recorded in Sweden?
The Swedish heat record, why higher readings were rejected and the highest in recent years.
Short answer
The highest temperature ever recorded in Sweden is 38 degrees, measured at Målilla in Småland on 29 June 1947 and at Ultuna near Uppsala on 9 July 1933, according to SMHI. SMHI calls the Målilla value the heat record still in force, and a tied record.
Why
- SMHI gives the Swedish heat record as 38.0 °C, reported at Målilla in eastern Småland on 29 June 1947, and describes it as the still-valid record.
- According to SMHI, Ultuna near Uppsala reported 38 °C on 9 July 1933, so the Målilla value is in fact a tied record.
- SMHI says that on 21 July 2022 Målilla reached 37.2 °C, the highest temperatures in Sweden since 1947 and just under one degree short of the record.
Details
SMHI says higher readings in June 1947, such as 39.1 °C at Alnarp in Skåne, were never approved because the shelter against reflected sunlight was inadequate. In 2025 the highest temperature in Sweden was 33.6 °C at Skellefteå airport on 24 July.
