How many seasons does Sweden have?

The four seasons and the two ways SMHI defines them.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Sweden has four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter, which SMHI defines either by calendar months or by the local daily mean temperature. By the calendar they run in three-month blocks from March, June, September and December. The meteorological seasons arrive on different dates in different parts of the country.

Why

  1. According to SMHI, the calendar definition counts spring as March to May, summer as June to August, autumn as September to November and winter as December to February.
  2. According to SMHI, in the meteorological definition winter is a daily mean temperature of 0.0 °C or lower and summer is 10.0 °C or higher.
  3. According to SMHI, spring and autumn are the periods when the daily mean temperature is above 0.0 °C but below 10.0 °C.

Details

A meteorological season counts as arrived after five days in a row with the matching temperature, and spring after seven days, according to SMHI. Because the definition follows temperature, the seasons arrive at different dates in the north and the south. SMHI says which definition suits best depends on the context.
