Why

  1. According to Visit Sweden, in January the sun in Stockholm sets at 2:55 pm, and in July it shines until 10:00 pm.
  2. According to SMHI, at the summer solstice there is midnight sun down to a line roughly level with Haparanda.
  3. According to Visit Sweden, the midnight sun in Kiruna lasts from 28 May to 14 July and in Abisko from 25 May to 18 July.

Details

During the midnight sun the sun stays above the horizon all day and night, so there is no sunset. SMHI adds that it never gets truly dark anywhere in Sweden at the summer solstice. In winter the reverse applies in the north: at Kiruna the sun does not reach above the horizon around 22 December.

Tip

Check a sun table for your own place and date before planning around sunset, because the time changes with both.
