Viable Cities is a research institute based in Stockholm that focuses on strategic innovation aimed at achieving climate-neutral cities by the year 2030. The initiative is led by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and is supported by funding from Energimyndigheten, Vinnova, and Formas. The organization's primary goal is to ensure a high quality of life while operating within the limits of planetary boundaries, addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
The institute offers various resources to facilitate local mobilization efforts against climate change, including a Viability Fund for Cities that aims to support climate finance initiatives. Viable Cities also hosts events such as Klimatfrukost, which fosters discussions on strategies for future-proofing urban environments. Additionally, the organization highlights successful mobility solutions from Sweden, which have been showcased in Brazil, and promotes public procurement as a means to drive climate-neutral initiatives. Currently, 48 Swedish cities are involved in Viable Cities' mission, reflecting a collaborative approach to urban sustainability.
