Nobel Day 2026: what can visitors do in Stockholm?

At a glance

Nobel Day falls on 10 December. In 2026, the Stockholm ceremony starts at 16:00 CET as a private event, while the City Hall banquet welcomes invited guests. Visitors can attend the museum programme and light festival. To watch online, choose the 2026 programme and check broadcast restrictions. Checked 03.11.2026.

What is Nobel Day and why is it held on 10 December?

Laureates receive their prizes on this date, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. The autumn announcements and December award ceremony are separate stages. An October announcement recording therefore does not replace coverage of the December ceremony. Nobel Prize award ceremonies and banquets (checked 03.11.2026).

Build your visit around what you want to experience: an exhibition, light artworks or the award ceremony on screen. For a wider plan, use Planning your visit to Stockholm.

How do the ceremony, banquet, museum and light festival differ?

Nobel Day has six parts that need different plans.

The word Nobel on an event listing does not itself mean you are buying admission to the award ceremony. Read the event name, venue and access conditions. Set aside separate time to explore independently: Stockholm in 48 hours can help you organise your other walks.

Can visitors attend the ceremony at Konserthuset?

Konserthuset's listing for Thursday 10 December 2026 gives a 16:00 start and the status Private event. This is a private ceremony, rather than an ordinary concert with public ticket sales. Stockholm uses CET, UTC+1, in December. Konserthuset: award ceremony on 10 December 2026 (checked 03.11.2026). Visit Sweden: time zones and daylight (checked 03.11.2026).

The venue says the soloist and programme will be announced later. Do not decide when to leave your hotel based on the length of last year's recording. To watch the full ceremony, set aside time without a planned transport connection or walk.

Can tourists buy tickets to the Nobel banquet?

The banquet takes place at Stockholm City Hall, while the award ceremony is at Konserthuset. Both welcome invited guests; there is no ordinary public sale of banquet admission tickets. A museum visit, city tour or separate lunch does not give access to the banquet hall. Visit Stockholm: access to the Nobel celebrations (checked 03.11.2026). Nobel Prize award ceremonies and banquets (checked 03.11.2026).

Evening footage from City Hall can easily look like a continuation of the event at the concert hall. Distinguish prisutdelning, the award ceremony, from bankett, the banquet, when searching for coverage. Check the banquet's start time in the organiser's 2026 programme.

Where can you watch Nobel Day 2026 online and on TV?

The ceremony and its TV coverage may start at different times.

16:00 CET is the ceremony time at Konserthuset on 10 December 2026. Check SVT's 2026 programme page for the coverage start and access from abroad. SVT Play's live channels are only available in Sweden; individual programmes may be available abroad depending on rights. The official Nobel Prize channel does not automatically confirm a banquet stream.

Sources: Konserthuset: 2026 award ceremony; Watching SVT Play abroad; Nobel Prize streams and terms of use. Checked: 2026-11-03.

As of the 03.11.2026 check, the exact slot for SVT's December 2026 coverage and its availability in other countries had not been confirmed in this guide. October announcement programmes are not the December ceremony.

NobelPrize.org identifies SVT as the producer and broadcaster of the Stockholm ceremony and banquet. Start with broadcaster SVT Play and the official Nobel Prize channel. Choose the programme for 10 December 2026: the year, event, start time, country restrictions and recording expiry all apply to the individual programme. NobelPrize.org: production and distribution partnerships (checked 03.11.2026).

CET means UTC+1. Convert the time if watching from another country and check whether your device already displays local time. The individual programme's overseas access notice matters more than whether the website opens. Do not assume the recording will remain available indefinitely.

What can you visit at the Nobel Prize Museum on 10 December?

For Nobel Day 2026, the museum at Stortorget 2 advertises an 11:00-17:00 programme of exhibitions, guided tours and ceremony screenings. The same page lists the Stockholm ceremony screening until 17:40. Confirm the actual visiting hours before planning to watch to the end. The 17:40 listing does not guarantee admission or permission to remain after 17:00. Nobel Prize Museum: Nobel Day 2026 (checked 03.11.2026). Nobel Prize Museum: Swedish Nobel Day 2026 listing (checked 03.11.2026).

The museum's Nobel lunch requires a separate advance reservation and is not the private banquet at City Hall. The museum has not been announced as a free alternative to the festival: check admission conditions on its event page. For other museum days, use Free-entry museums in Stockholm and check each venue's conditions separately.

First decide why you want to go inside: the exhibition objects, a tour in a particular language or a screening. You do not have to combine everything without breaks. With children, choose one clear activity and leave the option of going home earlier.

When and where is Nobel Week Lights 2026?

The festival is announced for 5-13 December 2026 in central Stockholm and Tensta. The artworks in public spaces are illuminated from 16:00 to 22:00 CET, with free festival admission. Nobel Week Lights 2026 (checked 03.11.2026). Nobel Week Lights visitor questions (checked 03.11.2026).

This is a separate city event and can fit another evening during the festival. The public outdoor programme does not grant entry to buildings carrying projections. Choose artworks on the current year's map rather than from a photograph of last winter.

If time is short, do not try to cover both the city centre and Tensta in one outing. Choose an area convenient for your accommodation and save your route back. Use Paying for SL transport for payment advice; check individual departures with the transport operator.

How can you plan your own Nobel Day?

Choose the experience before planning the route.

  1. Choose between watching the full ceremony, visiting the museum or walking among the light artworks.
  2. For a broadcast, find the programme marked 2026 and check access from your location.
  3. For the museum, read the day's programme and admission terms. For the festival, select artworks on the organiser's map.
  4. Allow time for travel, a warm break and the journey back.

Separate your priorities from optional activities. If watching the ceremony is the main aim, move the walk to another time. If you have come for light art, give it an evening and avoid tying your return to an assumed banquet finish time.

One area leaves room for an unhurried walk.

If the city atmosphere matters most, choose a few Nobel Week Lights artworks in one area, include a warm break and head back when you feel tired. This is an independent walking suggestion, not a guided tour timetable. To watch the full award ceremony, set aside time for it rather than walking at the same time.

For other December activities, use Christmas in Stockholm. It can help you spread different events across several days.

Where is the Nobel Peace Prize awarded that day?

The Peace Prize has a separate ceremony in Oslo. The official 2026 listing gives 10 December at 13:00 CET. This is not Stockholm City Hall or another stop between the museum and Konserthuset. The 2026 Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo (checked 03.11.2026).

Check the city when searching: City Hall appears in different programmes. For a visitor in Stockholm, coverage from Oslo means watching on screen, rather than visiting another nearby venue.

What should you check before setting out?

Save the admission conditions along with the address.

  • Check that the event page is for 2026.
  • Distinguish the award ceremony from a museum visit.
  • Convert CET to your time zone and check broadcast access.
  • Save the route back and dress for time outdoors.

Practical questions for your city visit

What you need indoors and outdoors may differ. Use Winter in Sweden to plan clothing and breaks. Save the page you need in advance and keep your plan short enough to adapt on the day.
