Can you book a hotel in Sweden if you are under 18?
What hotel chains and the Parental Code say about guests under 18.
Short answer
To book a stay with Scandic you must be at least 18, according to its booking terms, and Strawberry says each room needs a guest aged 18 or over. Scandic lets a guest under 18 stay without an adult only from age 13, with a certificate completed by a guardian. Rules differ between hotels.
Why
- According to Scandic's booking terms, you must be at least 18 to book a stay, and you are fully responsible for any damage or costs caused by a guest under 18.
- According to Strawberry, minors under 18 are not permitted to check in or stay in a room unless accompanied by an adult, and at least one person per room must be 18 or over.
- According to the Parental Code (föräldrabalken 9 kap. 1 §), a person under 18 is a minor and may not take on obligations on their own beyond what law or terms provide, which is a general rule and not a hotel rule.
Details
Strawberry says some hotels set separate age limits for spas, gyms and similar facilities. Scandic's earlier terms, for bookings made before 1 September 2026, asked for a permission form emailed to the hotel at least three days before arrival. Tip
Contact the hotel before you book if a guest is under 18, and have the guardian's certificate ready if the chain requires it.
What may differ
Rules differ by chain and hotel: Scandic sets 13 as the lowest age for staying without an adult, while Strawberry requires an adult in each room.
Common misconception
At 16 you can book a hotel in your own name because you can spend your own earnings.
What actually happens
The Parental Code lets a person over 16 manage what they have earned through their own work (9 kap. 3 §), but Scandic's terms still say you must be at least 18 to book.
