Where should you stay on Gotland and when should you book?
Types of stay across the island and what the official sites say about timing.
Short answer
Gotland has hotels, hostels, bed and breakfasts, cabins, apartments, camping and glamping spread across the whole island, according to the official Gotland site. That site gives no booking deadline, so for Medieval Week in early August settle your dates and book as early as you can.
Why
- According to gotland.com, hotels are spread across the whole island, from unusual boutique hotels to the well-known chains, and hostels come in small and large sizes.
- Destination Gotland's accommodation search lists hotels, hostels, cabins, camping, farmers' cottages, guest houses and private cabins and apartments in Visby, in northern Gotland including Fårö, and in the east, south and west.
- Gotland's tourism site says Medieval Week is held in the beginning of August every year, with the 2026 dates August 2 to 9, and the festival says many programme points sell out before the premiere day.
Details
The ferry to Visby from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn takes about three hours and is booked separately with Destination Gotland. Some cabins are let by the week: one listing says the Högklint cottages can be rented weekly from June to September. For the island itself, see our guide to Gotland and Visby, the ferry to Gotland and the weather on Gotland.
Tip
Fix your travel dates first, because the ferry and the accommodation are separate bookings. If your dates overlap Medieval Week, check the exact days on the festival site, which lists the 2026 week as August 2 to 9.
What may differ
The area changes the choice: Destination Gotland groups stays in Visby inside and outside the city walls, in the north including Fårö, and in the east, south and west. The Tourist Information Centre in Visby (Donnerska huset, Donners plats 1) is listed as the contact for questions.
Common misconception
On Gotland you can only stay in Visby.
What actually happens
Gotland's official site says accommodation is spread over the whole island, and Destination Gotland lists stays in the north, east, south and west as well as in Visby.
