How do you buy train tickets in Sweden?
Where to buy SJ and Snälltåget tickets and which ticket types exist.
Short answer
You can buy SJ tickets on SJ's website and in the SJ app, and Snälltåget tickets on its website or through its customer service. SJ releases tickets in batches for a travel period and sells non-changeable, changeable and refundable ticket types. Check the type before you pay.

SJ opens sales period by period: tickets for all domestic trains from 10 June to 31 August went on sale on 5 March 2025, and tickets up to 11 January were released on 1 October 2025. Snälltåget says tickets may also be bought on board if space permits, but no seat is guaranteed. What may differ
Interrail pass holders book SJ tickets on SJ's website and enter their Pass Cover Number, according to Interrail. Each train company sells its own tickets, so a Snälltåget ticket is bought from Snälltåget.
Common misconception
You can book any Swedish train ticket as far ahead as you like.
