Do you get compensation for a delayed Snälltåget train?
Delay limits, percentages, the claim deadline and night train rules.
Short answer
Yes, Snälltåget pays 25% of the ticket price if you arrive 60 to 119 minutes late and 50% if you arrive 120 minutes or more late. You apply through My Journey on its website within two months, once the whole journey in the booking is completed.
Why
- According to Snälltåget, you may qualify if you arrive at your final destination at least 60 minutes late: 25% of the ticket price for 60-119 minutes and 50% for 120 minutes or more.
- Snälltåget says you apply through My Journey with your booking number and email address, using the Delayed? button, and that the application must be submitted within two months.
- Snälltåget's terms say no payment is made if the amount is less than EUR 4 per person, and the company says you get no compensation if you were told about the delay before buying the ticket.
Details
For night trains the delay at departure must be more than 180 minutes, compared with the arrival time on the most recently issued timetable. Snälltåget says extraordinary circumstances or a third party's behaviour that could not be avoided may affect your right, and that the compensation does not cover losses such as lost earnings. Snälltåget also runs to Copenhagen and Hamburg, so see travelling to Denmark without a passport and night trains.
Tip
Wait until every trip in the booking is finished before you apply, and note the two-month deadline. For comparison with SJ, see trains in Sweden (SJ).
What may differ
Night trains have their own test, a delay at departure of more than 180 minutes, and tickets bought through tour operators follow different cancellation and change rules.
Common misconception
You get money back for any delay, however short.
What actually happens
Snälltåget's compensation starts at a delay of 60 minutes at the final destination, and no payment is made below EUR 4 per person.
