When is the cheapest time to book a train ticket in Sweden?
SJ's booking advice, release dates and the weekday effect on fares.
Short answer
SJ advises booking as early as possible to get the lowest price, and the Swedish Transport Agency finds that fares are generally higher on Fridays and Sundays. SJ releases tickets in batches, for example summer tickets on 5 March 2025 and winter tickets on 1 October 2025, so early booking depends on the release date.
Why
- SJ said on 5 March 2025 that, to secure a ticket at the lowest possible price, its advice is to book as early as possible.
- On 1 October 2025 SJ said that flexible travellers who book early can expect train fares at good prices, without giving figures.
- The Swedish Transport Agency says fares are generally higher on busy travel days, especially Fridays and Sundays, and that only a limited number of tickets are sold at the lowest prices.
Details
SJ's June 2024 release shows how far ahead sales can open: on 16 April 2024 tickets for 4-16 June were released, with the whole summer to follow at the end of April. The Transport Agency's price comparisons use tickets booked one week before departure. See how to buy SJ tickets and how to find cheap flights from Sweden for a comparison.
Tip
Follow SJ's release dates for your travel period and compare weekdays, because a Tuesday or Wednesday departure may be cheaper than a Friday or Sunday one. Discounts are explained in discounts and classes on SJ.
What may differ
Route and season matter: the Transport Agency links a large fare rise on Stockholm-Göteborg to roadworks that cut capacity and a temporary demand spike.
Common misconception
Cheap train tickets are always available if you book early enough.
What actually happens
The Transport Agency says it is usually a limited number of tickets that are sold at the lowest prices, so early booking improves the odds but does not guarantee a low fare.
