Is there a ferry from Sweden to England?
What the carriers' route lists show and how to reach England by sea.
Short answer
DFDS says private passengers are not carried on its Gothenburg-Immingham route, and its passenger routes to England start in France, the Netherlands and Jersey. Stena Line's route network lists no sailing from Sweden to England either. The carriers' route lists were checked on 28 October 2026, and no direct passenger ferry from Sweden to England appears in them.
Why
- DFDS says private passengers are not permitted to be carried through Immingham and that leisure passengers are no longer accepted on its Immingham freight routes.
- DFDS sells passenger routes to the UK from Calais, Dunkirk and Dieppe in France, from Amsterdam in the Netherlands and from Jersey, according to its passenger ferry page.
- Stena Line's route network lists Gothenburg-Kiel, Gothenburg-Frederikshavn and Trelleborg-Rostock from Sweden, and for England it lists Hoek van Holland-Harwich and Rotterdam-Harwich.
Details
A sea route to England therefore starts outside Sweden: you can take a ferry from Sweden to Germany or Denmark first and continue from there. For the Germany crossings, see ferries and the archipelago, and for travel without a car, see Scandinavia without a car by train and ferry. For the visa side of a UK trip, see whether Swedes need a visa for the UK.
Tip
If you want to avoid flying, check the passenger routes to England on DFDS's and Stena Line's own sites for your travel date and plan the leg from Sweden separately.
What may differ
DFDS says its Gothenburg-Ghent freight route offers limited space for passengers under conditions, with no children under 14 and no pets, but that route goes to Belgium, not England.
Common misconception
You can still take a passenger ferry from Gothenburg to England.
What actually happens
DFDS's Gothenburg-Immingham route carries freight, and DFDS says private passengers are not permitted to be carried through Immingham.
