How long is the flight to Sweden?
Flight times from the UK and the New York area, and why your own route may differ.
Short answer
Direct flights from the UK to Sweden take up to about three and a half hours, according to Visit Sweden. From the New York area a direct flight is scheduled at roughly eight to nine hours, and the time depends on your departure city and on whether you change planes.
Why
- Visit Sweden says the maximum flight time is approximately three and a half hours for direct flights from Birmingham, Edinburgh, London and Manchester.
- SAS says it offers multiple direct departures every day from London to Stockholm.
- Visit Sweden says SAS and Delta operate direct flights between the United States and Sweden, with routes and schedules varying by season.
Details
The eight to nine hours from New York is worked out from airline schedules that Swedavia published: United's summer 2023 flight from Stockholm Arlanda left at 09:10 and landed at Newark at 11:55, and the return left Newark at 17:15 and landed at 07:25 the next morning, all in local time. Because New York is six hours behind Sweden, those flights are about 8 hours 45 minutes and 8 hours 10 minutes. For airports and routes, see airports and flights to Sweden.
Tip
Compare the departure and arrival times in your booking, which are shown in local time at each airport, and add the time difference when you work out the real flight time. To compare fares as well, see how to find cheap flights from Sweden.
What may differ
The time depends on your departure city, on whether the flight is direct, and on the season, because routes and schedules vary through the year.
Common misconception
You have to change planes in Europe to fly from the USA to Sweden.
What actually happens
Visit Sweden says SAS and Delta operate direct flights between the United States and Sweden, and SAS says it flies directly from Stockholm to Newark.
