How long is the flight from New York to Sweden?
Example schedules for Delta and United flights, and what changes the time.
Short answer
A direct flight between the New York area and Stockholm is scheduled at roughly eight to nine hours, based on the times Swedavia published for Delta and United flights. Flights with a change take longer, and routes and schedules vary by season.
Why
- Swedavia's schedule for Delta's JFK-Stockholm service gave flight DL205 from Stockholm at 11:30 to JFK at 14:10, and DL204 from JFK at 19:30 to Stockholm at 09:30 the next day.
- Swedavia's schedule for United's Newark route in summer 2023 gave UA69 from Stockholm at 09:10 to Newark at 11:55, and UA68 from Newark at 17:15 to Stockholm at 07:25 the next day.
- Delta says it operates daily summer service between New York JFK and Stockholm, and SAS says it flies directly from Stockholm to Newark.
Details
All times in these schedules are local. New York is six hours behind Sweden (UTC-5 in winter, UTC-4 in summer, against UTC+1 and UTC+2 in Sweden), so the Delta flights work out at about 8 hours 40 minutes westbound and 8 hours eastbound, and the United flights at about 8 hours 45 minutes and 8 hours 10 minutes. These are old published examples, not today's timetable. For other routes, see airports and flights to Sweden.
Tip
Check the flight time for your date in the airline's booking and remember that departure and arrival are in local time. For how to get from the airport into town, see Arlanda and alternative airports.
What may differ
The time depends on which New York airport you use (JFK or Newark), on the airline, on the direction and on whether you change planes. Routes are seasonal.
Common misconception
Direct flights between New York and Sweden run all year.
What actually happens
Visit Sweden says routes and schedules between the United States and Sweden vary by season, and Delta describes its JFK-Stockholm service as daily summer service.
