Are there night trains in Sweden?
Which night trains run, who operates them and when to check.
Short answer
Yes, Sweden has night trains: SJ runs them to Umeå and to Narvik via Luleå and Kiruna, and Snälltåget runs to the Jämtland mountains and Berlin. SJ holds the state-procured contract for upper Norrland from December 2026 to December 2028, with sleeper and couchette cars.
Why
- Trafikverket says it has assigned SJ the night train service to upper Norrland from December 2026 to December 2028, with daily return trips Stockholm-Narvik and Stockholm-Umeå.
- According to Snälltåget, its night trains run from Malmö via Stockholm to the Jämtland mountains in summer and winter, and it serves Berlin and Hamburg 220 days a year.
- SJ released tickets on 19 October 2026 for its night trains Stockholm-Umeå and Stockholm-Boden-Kiruna-Narvik for travel from 13 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.
Details
On the SJ night train to Narvik, Kiruna Lapland lists a seat, a sleeping car or a private compartment with shower and toilet in first class. Snälltåget's night trains also reach Austria in winter. For the northern routes, see the night trains guide and, for the season in Lapland, when to visit Swedish Lapland.
Tip
Book sleeper places early for holiday periods and check the operator's calendar, because Snälltåget's night trains do not run every day. More background is in the night trains guide.
What may differ
Night trains differ by region and season: SJ's contract requires daily return trips to upper Norrland, while Snälltåget's trains to the mountains and to Austria run in set winter and summer periods.
Common misconception
