Do you need a passport to take the train between Malmö and Copenhagen?
Border checks on the Öresund trains and which ID to carry.
Short answer
Bring a valid passport or national ID card, because Sweden has temporary border control on its border with Denmark that affects passengers on the Öresund trains. Öresundståg's timetable says border control takes place at Hyllie station for trips from Denmark. Sweden has notified checks until 11 May 2027.
Why
- Öresundståg states on its start page that border controls of passengers entering Sweden are currently being carried out, which affects passengers crossing the Öresund Bridge.
- Sweden Abroad says the decision on reintroduced border control at the internal border is renewed every six months and the current decision runs until 11 November 2026, with a new period notified to the European Commission until 11 May 2027.
- Sweden Abroad also says the carriers' ID checks on buses, trains and ferries in the Öresund region have ended, and advises always carrying valid ID.
Details
Sweden Abroad names a passport, a national ID card or a driving licence issued in a Nordic country as valid ID for Nordic citizens, and the Swedish Police say EU/EEA citizens need a valid passport or national ID card. Öresundståg's terms also require a valid ID to be shown with the ticket at inspection, and the Hyllie note comes from its timetable valid 16 February to 7 June 2026. Tip
Keep the ID in your pocket, not in your luggage, so you can show it quickly when asked. For how the line works, see the Øresund bridge and trains guide.
What may differ
What counts as valid ID depends on your citizenship: the Swedish Police name a passport or national ID card for EU/EEA citizens, and Sweden Abroad adds a Nordic driving licence for Nordic citizens. Entry rules for other nationalities are in do I need a visa to go to Sweden. At ticket inspection, Öresundståg says children under 16 need not identify themselves.
Common misconception
Schengen means nobody checks ID between Sweden and Denmark.
What actually happens
Sweden has reintroduced temporary border control at its internal border, and Öresundståg says checks of passengers entering Sweden are being carried out.
