What is the difference between SJ 3000 and X2000?
Two SJ high-speed train types, when they entered service and what SJ says about them.
Short answer
SJ 3000 is the X55 train that entered service in 2012, while the tilting X2000 began running between Stockholm and Gothenburg in 1990. Since December 2011 SJ has marketed services with both train types as the SJ High-Speed Train. The rebuilt X2000 trains from November 2021 keep the original steel body and tilt system.
Why
- According to Wikipedia, the X2 entered commercial service on 4 September 1990 between Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the X55 trains are also known as SJ 3000.
- SJ announced in 2011 that it was introducing 20 new SJ 3000 trains with 5,000 seats in total, with service in first class and a well-stocked bistro.
- SJ said in November 2021 that its rebuilt X 2000 keeps the original steel chassis and tilt system, while nearly everything inside the steel shell is new.
Details
According to Wikipedia, SJ 3000 trains made their debut on Stockholm-Sundsvall on 6 February 2012 and also serve Stockholm connections such as Karlstad, Oslo and Falun. Interrail says seat reservations are compulsory on SJ high-speed trains. For the full picture of SJ services, see trains in Sweden (SJ), and for the Norwegian side of the Oslo route see how the Norway-Sweden border works.
Tip
If you travel with a pass, book your seat early, because Interrail says you can only board SJ high-speed trains with a reservation. Fares and classes are explained in discounts and classes on SJ.
What may differ
This comparison covers the two high-speed train types. SJ Regional and SJ InterCity are separate service categories, according to Interrail.
Common misconception
SJ 3000 is just another name for the X2000.
What actually happens
They are different trains: X2000 entered service in 1990 and SJ 3000 (X55) in 2012, according to Wikipedia, although SJ has marketed both as the SJ High-Speed Train since December 2011.
