How do you get from Stockholm to Copenhagen by train?
Direct train or a change in Malmö, and how long it takes.
Short answer
Yes, you can go from Stockholm to Copenhagen by train, either on Snälltåget's direct service via Malmö or by taking a train to Malmö and changing to an Öresundståg train. The journey takes about 6 hours. The Öresund leg must be bought before you board, because the train does not sell tickets.
Why
- According to Snälltåget, its new direct day train between Stockholm, Malmö, Copenhagen and Hamburg started on 4 May 2026, with services in both directions.
- Snälltåget's timetable shows train 307 leaving Stockholm C at 10:43 and reaching København Syd at 16:46, after a stop in Malmö C.
- Öresundståg's timetable, valid from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026, shows trains from Malmö C reaching København H in 38 to 39 minutes.
Details
Snälltåget sold its day-train departures for 4 May to 1 November 2026, so check its site for winter times, although the company says it runs between Copenhagen, Malmö and Stockholm all year. If you change in Malmö instead, Visit Sweden gives about 4.5 hours for national trains from Stockholm to Malmö, followed by the short Öresund ride. For the crossing itself, see travelling to Denmark without a passport.
Tip
Buy the Öresund ticket in advance on the Öresundståg site or at a machine, because you cannot buy a ticket on the train. For more on this route, see the train to Copenhagen guide.
