Is there a direct ferry from Stockholm to Germany?

Where to catch a ferry to Germany if you start in Stockholm.

Short answer

Ports of Stockholm lists passenger ferries from Stockholm to Helsinki, Turku and Tallinn, and none to Germany. Ferries to Germany leave from other Swedish ports: Gothenburg for Kiel with Stena Line, Trelleborg for Rostock and Travemünde with TT-Line, and Malmö for Travemünde with Finnlines. Gothenburg-Kiel takes about 14 hours.

Why

  1. Ports of Stockholm lists Helsinki, Turku, Tallinn and Birka Gotland cruises among the services from its Stockholm terminals, and does not mention Germany.
  2. Stena Line lists Gothenburg-Kiel with a crossing time of about 14 hours and up to one departure a day.
  3. TT-Line lists Trelleborg-Travemünde at 8 hours and Trelleborg-Rostock at 6 hours, and Finnlines lists Malmö-Travemünde at 9 hours.

Details

From Stockholm you therefore travel to Gothenburg, Trelleborg or Malmö first, and then take the ferry. For a trip without a car, see Scandinavia without a car by train and ferry, and for documents, see whether you need a passport to travel from Sweden to Germany.

Tip

Decide the Swedish port first, because the ferry departures to Germany depend on it: Gothenburg-Kiel is the long crossing, while Trelleborg-Rostock takes about 6 hours.

What may differ

Departure days and times vary: Finnlines lists different times for each weekday on Travemünde-Malmö, so check the carrier's timetable for your date.

Common misconception

The big Baltic ferries from Stockholm also call at German ports.

What actually happens

Ports of Stockholm names Finland, Åland and Estonia as the destinations of the scheduled passenger ferries from Stockholm. Sailings to Germany go from Gothenburg, Trelleborg and Malmö.
