Is there a ferry from Stockholm to Riga?
What happened to the Riga route and how to get to Latvia instead.
Short answer
No ferry runs from Stockholm to Riga at present, because Tallink suspended its Riga-Stockholm passenger service on 16 March 2020 and the route has not been restored. Ports of Stockholm lists passenger ferries to Helsinki, Turku and Tallinn. From Tallinn it is less than five hours to Riga by bus or car, according to Tallink.
Why
- The Freeport of Riga Authority reported that Tallink Grupp would suspend the Riga-Stockholm passenger service with Romantika and Isabelle from 16 March 2020.
- Ports of Stockholm lists Helsinki, Turku and Tallinn as the destinations of its scheduled passenger ferries and does not list Riga.
- Tallink says it is less than five hours from Tallinn to Riga by bus or car.
Details
The Latvian public broadcaster LSM reported on 3 July 2026 that Latvia's economics minister and Tallink's chief executive agreed to keep working on resuming the route, and no restart date was given. Stena Line sails Nynäshamn-Ventspils in Latvia in about 8 hours 30 minutes, but Ventspils is a different port from Riga. Tip
If you need to reach Riga by sea and road, look at Tallink's Stockholm-Tallinn sailings and plan the bus or car leg from Tallinn separately.
What may differ
The situation can change: LSM reported ongoing talks in July 2026 about restoring regular passenger and cargo service, so check Tallink's route list before you plan around a restart.
Common misconception
There is still a daily Tallink ferry between Stockholm and Riga.
What actually happens
The Freeport of Riga Authority reported that Tallink suspended the Riga-Stockholm passenger service from 16 March 2020, and Ports of Stockholm lists no Riga sailing among its passenger ferries today.
