Can you take a stroller as hand luggage on a flight from Sweden?
What SAS, Norwegian, Copenhagen Airport and Swedavia say about strollers on flights.
Short answer
SAS lets travellers with an infant or a child aged 2 to 11 take a compact or umbrella stroller into the cabin, but every airline sets its own rules. Larger strollers go in the hold: SAS and Norwegian both carry one stroller for a child free of charge as checked baggage.
Why
- According to SAS, a compact stroller (max 55 x 40 x 23 cm) or an umbrella stroller (max 20 x 20 x 100 cm) can go in the cabin if you travel with an infant or a child aged 2 to 11.
- SAS says only umbrella strollers are allowed in the cabin on Embraer E195 aircraft, even if a compact stroller meets the normal carry-on size limits.
- Norwegian lists one car seat and/or one stroller as included checked baggage for infants and for children aged 2 to 11.
Details
SAS also lets you check in one stroller or buggy and one child safety seat on top of your checked baggage allowance, up to 23 kg each. Copenhagen Airport says the airlines decide whether you can take your own stroller on board, and that a lightweight stroller can usually go through security all the way to the gate. A stroller needs a special luggage tag from a manual check-in counter. Swedavia lists strollers among special baggage at Landvetter: you get a tag at the check-in counter and then leave the stroller at the special baggage drop. Tip
Check your airline's stroller page before you pack, and ask at check-in whether you can keep the stroller until the gate. Baggage rules also affect what a ticket really costs, see how to find cheap flights from Sweden.
What may differ
The cabin option on SAS depends on the child's age and the aircraft type: on Embraer E195 flights only umbrella strollers are allowed. Other airlines have their own size limits, and some airports lend strollers if you must check yours before security.
Common misconception
A stroller always counts as hand luggage and can be taken on board.
What actually happens
Copenhagen Airport says it is the airlines that set the rules on bringing a stroller on board, and SAS only allows compact or umbrella strollers within set sizes. Other strollers are checked in.
