How do you get to Kebnekaise by train?
The train to Kiruna, the bus to Nikkaluokta and the last stretch.
Short answer
There is no train to Kebnekaise itself: trains run to Kiruna, and from there the Nikkaluoktaexpressen bus goes to Nikkaluokta, where you continue towards Kebnekaise Mountain Station. From Stockholm, SJ's night train serves Kiruna. In summer a boat can shorten the hike, and in winter snowmobiles are used.
Why
- Nikkaluokta says trains run daily to and from Kiruna, operated by SJ, and that the Nikkaluoktaexpressen bus stops at the airport, the bus station and the train station.
- Nikkaluokta says that in summer you can book boat transport up the Vistas valley to shorten the hike, and that in winter snowmobiles take you to Kebnekaise Mountain Station.
- According to SJ, passengers to Kiruna, Abisko and Narvik change trains in Boden until the December 2026 timetable change, when a direct Stockholm-Narvik night train is due.
Details
Kiruna Lapland says the Kiruna station is about 6 km from the city centre, and free shuttle buses meet all train arrivals and departures. Nikkaluokta says driving from Kiruna takes less than an hour, and its page does not give bus times, so ask the bus operator or Nikkaluokta for the timetable. For the whole Kiruna and Abisko area, see Kiruna and Abisko logistics and where to stay in Kiruna.
Tip
Check the bus times before you leave and ask Nikkaluokta about boat or snowmobile transport if you want it, since both depend on the season. Trip ideas for the area are in Lapland: Kiruna-Abisko.
What may differ
The last stretch depends on the season: Nikkaluokta describes boat transport in summer and snowmobiles in winter, and the rest of the way is on foot.
Common misconception
You can take a train all the way to Kebnekaise.
What actually happens
Trains reach Kiruna, and Nikkaluokta lists the Nikkaluoktaexpressen bus from the airport, bus station and train station there; the mountain station is reached with boat, snowmobile or on foot.
