Why do Swedish trains honk?
When Trafikverket's rules require a train to sound its horn.
Short answer
Train drivers in Sweden give a long warning signal of about three seconds when people on or near the track need warning, and in certain level crossing situations. Trafikverket's rules also require the signal at audible-signal boards beside the track, and some of these apply only between 06.00 and 22.00.
Why
- Trafikverket's traffic rules for railways (module 3, valid from 1 June 2026) describe the "Tåg kommer" signal as a long signal of about three seconds, given with a horn or whistle.
- According to the rules the signal must be given when the driver judges that people on or near the track need warning, at an audible-signal board, and when a road vehicle seems unlikely to stop at a level crossing.
- Trafikverket says trains are quiet and fast with a long braking distance, and cannot swerve or brake suddenly if someone appears on the tracks.
Details
When people need warning at start-up or at low speed, the rules allow the signal to be shortened to a short sound. A board with the plate "dagtid" applies only between 06.00 and 22.00, a "V" plate adds a second signal about midway to the next level crossing, and an "A" plate repeats the signal until the next work site is reached or the driver judges that a track warner has noticed the train. Tip
At a level crossing, Trafikverket says warnings always start with red flashing lights and a sound signal, and that light and sound signals give less safety than barriers. See also trains in Sweden (SJ).
What may differ
The signal depends on place and situation: some audible-signal boards apply only in daytime hours (06.00-22.00), and the signal can be shortened at start-up or low speed.
Common misconception
Train drivers sound the horn whenever they feel like it.
What actually happens
Trafikverket's rules define when the "Tåg kommer" signal must be given, for example at an audible-signal board or when people on or near the track need warning.
