Where can you park for free in Stockholm?
Which zones are free in the evening and on Sundays, and which are not.
Short answer
Street parking in Stockholm is free outside the paid hours in tax zones 3, 4 and 5, while zones 1 and 2 charge at all hours. Those three zones list no fee outside their listed hours, but the sign on the street decides which fee and times apply.
Why
- In zone 3, the City of Stockholm lists 20 kronor per hour on weekdays 07:00–19:00 and 15 kronor per hour on the day before a Sunday or holiday 11:00–17:00, and free of charge at other times.
- Zone 4 costs 10 kronor per hour and zone 5 costs 5 kronor per hour on weekdays 07:00–19:00, and both are free of charge at other times, according to the city.
- Zone 1 costs 55 kronor per hour on all days around the clock, and zone 2 costs 31 kronor per hour in the daytime and 20 kronor per hour at other times, so neither is free.
Details
According to the city's area descriptions, Gamla stan lies in zone 2 and parts of Södermalm in zone 3, but the street signage decides which fee you pay. Tip
Read the supplementary sign before you leave the car: the city says Sundays and public holidays are shown with red numbers, and the day before them follows the Saturday times.
What may differ
Times differ by zone and day. The day before a Sunday or holiday, usually Saturday, has its own hours, for example 11:00–17:00 in zones 3 and 4, and in zone 5 the listed fee applies on weekdays only.
Common misconception
Street parking is free everywhere in Stockholm in the evening and at weekends.
What actually happens
Zone 1 charges 55 kronor per hour around the clock on all days, and zone 2 charges at all hours, with 31 kronor per hour on Sundays between 09:00 and 19:00.
