How long can you park on the street in Sweden?

The 24-hour rule, how signs change it and where it applies.

Short answer

You may park on a public street in a built-up area for at most 24 consecutive hours on weekdays, with an exception for the weekday before a Sunday or holiday. Signs for paid or time-limited parking override this general rule.

Why

  1. The Traffic Ordinance (3 kap. 49 a §) on riksdagen.se says that on public places in built-up areas where the municipality is responsible, and within the road area of public roads, vehicles may be parked at most 24 consecutive hours on weekdays, except the weekday before a Sunday or public holiday.
  2. Transportstyrelsen's brochure repeats the rule: on a street or public road a vehicle may be parked at most 24 consecutive hours on weekdays, except the weekday before a Sunday or public holiday.
  3. The City of Stockholm says that during servicetider it is forbidden to park on the street, and that the sign on the street always decides when a parking ban applies.

Details

Paid and time-limited spaces have their own limits, shown by plates such as the one for the longest permitted parking time. Staying beyond a space's limits costs SEK 1,100 in Stockholm. See parking and fines in Sweden and overnight stays in a campervan.

Tip

If the car will stay for several days, read the signs for time limits and cleaning times, and consider a car park or a residential permit. See parking facilities in Stockholm.

What may differ

The rule is for public places where the municipality is responsible. On private land the landowner's terms apply, and Transportstyrelsen says that where a landowner uses the E19 sign, parking is allowed for at most 24 consecutive hours on weekdays unless a plate says otherwise.

Common misconception

With no sign you can leave your car on the street for as long as you like.

What actually happens

The Traffic Ordinance sets a general limit of 24 consecutive hours on weekdays for public places in built-up areas, and signs or servicetider can limit parking further.
