How long do you have to pay a parking fine?

The eight-day deadline, the reminders and what changes on private land.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

A parking notice from a municipality or the police on a public street must be paid within eight days of being issued, according to Transportstyrelsen. A kontrollavgift on private land is paid to the issuer named on it, and the deadline is stated on the charge. Late payment leads to two reminders.

Why

  1. Transportstyrelsen says payment of a parking notice must be made within eight days of the notice being issued.
  2. Transportstyrelsen says the first reminder has no extra fee and 21 days to pay, and the second reminder adds SEK 150 with another 21 days.
  3. Parkering Göteborg says a parking notice on street land is paid within 8 days to Transportstyrelsen, and its own kontrollavgift on private land within 10 days to the party named on the charge.

Details

If the fee is still unpaid after the two reminders, Transportstyrelsen hands the case to Kronofogden for collection, and the registered owner at the time of the parking is the one responsible for payment. See parking and fines in Sweden and how a private parking charge works.

Tip

Pay as soon as you get the notice and enter the OCR or reference number printed on it. Even if you plan to contest a municipal notice, Transportstyrelsen says it must still be paid.

What may differ

On private land you pay the issuer named on the kontrollavgift and follow the payment time stated on the charge, for example 10 days for Parkering Göteborg's own charges. You contact the issuer, not Transportstyrelsen.

Common misconception

Paying a parking fine late costs nothing extra.

What actually happens

The first reminder carries no extra fee, but according to Transportstyrelsen the second reminder adds SEK 150, and unpaid cases are handed to Kronofogden.
