How do you ride the metro in Stockholm?
Tickets, lines and ticket checks on the Stockholm metro.
Short answer
To ride the Stockholm metro you need a valid SL ticket, for example a 75-minute adult single for SEK 43 bought in the SL app or with a tapped bank card. The metro has three main lines, green, red and blue, and all three meet at T-Centralen.
Why
- According to SL, the 75-minute single ticket costs SEK 43 for adults and SEK 26 at the reduced fare, and allows an unlimited number of trips within 75 minutes.
- SL says you can buy the ticket in the SL app, with an SL card, by tapping a bank card, at ticket offices in the metro and commuter trains, and at agents such as Pressbyrån.
- According to Visit Stockholm, failing to show a valid ticket in a ticket check brings a penalty fee of SEK 1,500.
Details
Tapping a bank card buys an adult single ticket, and the reduced fare must be set up on SL's website no later than the day before the trip. Cash is accepted only at the ticket offices in the metro. For stations and where to change, see train and subway stations in Stockholm, and for safety on busy platforms, see pickpockets in Stockholm.
Tip
If you are under 20 or 65 or older and pay with a bank card, set up the reduced fare on SL's website at least a day ahead, or the card will buy an adult ticket. The wider SL system is covered in the guide to urban transport.
What may differ
Children under 7 travel free with a person who has a valid ticket, and an adult with a ticket can take up to six children aged 7–11 for free, according to SL.
Common misconception
You need a special SL card to ride the metro.
What actually happens
SL lets you tap a bank card to buy an adult single ticket, and you can also buy tickets in the SL app.
