Can you park in an EV charging space if you are not charging?
What the charging-space sign allows and what Stockholm adds.
Short answer
Only vehicles that can be charged externally may park at a charging space, according to Transportstyrelsen, so a car with no plug-in option may not use it. The City of Stockholm adds that such vehicles may park there without charging.
Why
- Transportstyrelsen says plate T24 is used under the parking sign E19 and means that only vehicles able to be charged externally with electricity for propulsion may park.
- The City of Stockholm says only cars that can be charged externally may park at a charging space on street land, and that they may do so without charging.
- According to the City of Stockholm, ordinary parking rates, residential rates and any posted time limit still apply at a charging space.
Details
Stockholm's example sign reads that only chargeable vehicles with the option of external charging may park, and its example for one zone limits the time to three hours on weekdays 07.00–19.00 and Saturdays 11.00–17.00. In Stockholm, parking where it is not allowed, or breaking a space's limits and rules, costs SEK 1,100. See parking and fines in Sweden and parking charges on private land.
Tip
Read the whole sign for the time limit and rate before you leave the car, because ordinary parking rates and time limits still apply in Stockholm. See also parking facilities in Stockholm.
What may differ
On private land the landowner's own terms apply, and Konsumentverket says a kontrollavgift may only be charged if the rules are clearly shown on site. Time limits and fees on the signs apply at charging spaces too.
Common misconception
You have to be plugged in to park at a charging space in Stockholm.
What actually happens
The City of Stockholm says cars with the option of external charging may park at charging spaces without charging. The condition is that the vehicle can be charged externally.
