How close to a pedestrian crossing can you park?
The 10-metre rule before pedestrian and cycle crossings.
Short answer
You may not stop or park on a pedestrian crossing or within 10 metres before it, according to the Swedish Traffic Ordinance and Transportstyrelsen. The same 10 metres apply before cycle passages and cycle crossings, and the ban is not shown by road signs.
Why
- The Traffic Ordinance (3 kap. 53 §) on riksdagen.se bans stopping and parking on or within ten metres before a pedestrian crossing, a cycle passage or a cycle crossing.
- Transportstyrelsen's brochure says you must not stop or park on a pedestrian crossing or closer than 10 metres before one.
- Transportstyrelsen says bans of this kind are not shown by road signs, so you have to know them anyway.
Details
The rule is worded as the distance before the crossing, and local rules or signs can add more limits. Stockholm lists SEK 1,300 for stopping where it is not allowed and SEK 1,100 for parking where it is not allowed. See parking and fines in Sweden and crossing with a bike at a pedestrian crossing.
Tip
When in doubt, park further from the crossing than you think you need to, because the rule is a full 10 metres before it.
What may differ
The same 10 metres apply before cycle passages and cycle crossings. Local rules on stopping and parking also exist, and Transportstyrelsen says they are normally marked with road signs.
Common misconception
A pedestrian crossing only matters if your car blocks the stripes themselves.
What actually happens
The Traffic Ordinance bans stopping and parking on the crossing and also within ten metres before it, and Transportstyrelsen repeats the 10 metres in its brochure.
