How close to an intersection can you park in Sweden?

The 10-metre rule at junctions and what the law says about signs.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

You may not stop or park in a junction or within 10 metres of the crossing road's nearest outer edge, according to the Swedish Traffic Ordinance and Transportstyrelsen. The ban applies even where there is no sign, so you are expected to know it.

Why

  1. The Traffic Ordinance (3 kap. 53 §) on riksdagen.se bans stopping and parking in a road junction or within ten metres of the nearest outer edge of a crossing carriageway.
  2. Transportstyrelsen's brochure on stopping and parking gives the same rule: not in a junction and not closer than 10 metres from the crossing road's nearest outer edge.
  3. Transportstyrelsen says bans of this kind are not shown by road signs, so you have to know them anyway.

Details

In Stockholm the city lists SEK 1,100 for parking where it is not allowed and SEK 1,300 for stopping where it is not allowed. Local rules and signs can add further limits on top of the national ones. See parking and fines in Sweden and what Stockholm says about minutes over the time.

Tip

Leave clear space at every corner, and when you are unsure, park further along the street rather than guessing the distance.

What may differ

At pedestrian crossings, cycle crossings and cycle passages the Traffic Ordinance bans stopping and parking on them and within 10 metres before them. Transportstyrelsen also says local rules on stopping and parking exist, normally marked with road signs.

Common misconception

You may park right up to a junction if there is no sign.

What actually happens

Transportstyrelsen says these bans are not shown by road signs and that you must know them anyway. The rule itself is in the Traffic Ordinance.
