How does resident parking (boendeparkering) work in Stockholm?
Who can apply, where the permit works and what it does not cover.
Short answer
Resident parking in Stockholm requires that you are the registered owner of a vehicle and registered as living in a resident parking area, and you apply through the city's e-service. The permit lets you park longer at a lower fee, but only in your own area and only where signs show resident parking.
Why
- According to the City of Stockholm, you must be the registered owner of a vehicle and registered as resident in a resident parking area.
- The city says the permit does not cover the parking fee, so you must still pay for the parking, and it only works in the area where you live.
- The city says newer developments such as Norra Djurgårdsstaden, Annedal and Hagastaden have no on-street resident parking, and neither do properties with building permits issued from 1 July 2025.
Details
Parking is allowed only where signs show resident parking, and some streets allow it only in the evenings, at night and at weekends. Streets without such signs charge the visitor rate. For costs see our guide to parking and congestion taxes, and for the paid-time tolerance see how many minutes over the time you can park in Stockholm.
Tip
Contact the city on 08-651 00 00 (open Monday to Sunday 08:00–16:30) or at [email protected] if your address is new or unclear. From 1 September 2026, residents with a Kivra mailbox get resident parking invoices there.
What may differ
Gamla stan permit holders may also park as residents in Södermalm, Kungsholmen, the City area, Östermalm and Vasastan. Rules also vary by street, so the signs on site decide.
Common misconception
A resident parking permit means you park for free.
What actually happens
The City of Stockholm says that even with a resident permit you must also pay for the parking itself, at the lower resident rate.
