Which SJ routes accept Västtrafik tickets and the conditions that apply.

Short answer

Yes, Västtrafik tickets are valid on SJ Regional trains on three routes from Gothenburg, but not on all departures, so check the journey planner. The routes are Gothenburg-Borås-Limmared-Värnamo, Gothenburg-Skövde-Örebro and Gothenburg-Åmål-Säffle. Tickets must be activated before the train departs, and they cannot be bought on board SJ trains.

Details

Västtrafik also lists Vy Tåg on Gothenburg-Trollhättan-Halden and Öresundståg on Gothenburg-Varberg as partners. Some ticket types differ by operator: senior tickets are not valid on some SJ routes but are valid for the current zone on Vy. For the zone system, see Västtrafik zones A, B and C, and for SJ's long-distance trains, see trains with SJ. Overall trip costs are covered in how much a trip to Sweden costs.

Tip

Activate your Västtrafik ticket before the train leaves and look up your exact departure in the journey planner to see whether the ticket is accepted.

What may differ

Rules differ by route: trips to Varberg, Örebro, Värmland and Halden need a destination stated on the ticket, and zone rules apply beyond the Västtrafik border stations.

Common misconception

A Västtrafik ticket is valid on every SJ train in western Sweden.

What actually happens

According to Västtrafik, its tickets work on SJ Regional only on three routes and not on all departures, so check each trip in the journey planner.
