What does a parking sign mean in Sweden?

How to read the P sign, the supplementary plates and the ban signs.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

The P sign (E19) means parking is allowed, and the plates under it set the terms, such as times, a fee, a parking disc or a maximum time. Read the whole sign from top to bottom, because the plates decide when, how long and for which vehicles you may park.

Why

  1. Transportstyrelsen says the E19 sign means parking is allowed on a parking area or along a stretch of road, and that the permission applies as set out on a supplementary plate.
  2. According to Transportstyrelsen, plate T6 shows when the sign applies: black or white numbers without brackets are weekdays except the day before a Sunday or public holiday, numbers in brackets are that day before, and red numbers are Sundays and public holidays.
  3. Transportstyrelsen describes plate T16 as a fee according to the tariff on the machine, T17 as a parking disc showing when you started parking, and T18 as the longest permitted parking time.

Details

The ban signs work differently: C35 bans parking and C39 bans stopping and parking, and the ban applies on the side of the road where the sign stands. The City of Stockholm stresses that the sign on the street always decides when a parking ban applies. See parking and fines in Sweden and what Stockholm says about minutes over the time.

Tip

Check every plate before you leave the car, since a single plate can turn free parking into paid or disc parking. Fees for getting it wrong are in Stockholm's rules on minutes over the time.

What may differ

Signs use the plate wording and times, so the same P sign can mean something different on two streets. Transportstyrelsen says local rules on stopping and parking also exist and are normally marked with road signs.

Common misconception

A P sign with no plate under it lets you park for as long as you like.

What actually happens

Transportstyrelsen's text on E19 says that where a landowner uses the sign, parking is allowed for at most 24 consecutive hours on weekdays unless a plate says otherwise. On public streets the Traffic Ordinance sets the same 24-hour limit.
