Short answer

Stockholm's metro opened on 1 October 1950, when the green line began running between Slussen and Hökarängen. Region Stockholm marked the 75th anniversary in autumn 2025, and the red line followed in 1964 and the blue line in 1975.

Why

  1. Region Stockholm says the first metro line, the green line, ran between Slussen and Hökarängen, and that the metro turned 75 on 1 October.
  2. SVT writes that the green line was first and was inaugurated on 1 October 1950, built on old tramway routes.
  3. According to Region Stockholm, the red line opened in 1964 and the blue line in 1975, the first line built entirely in tunnel.

Details

Sveriges Radio also dates Sweden's first metro line to 1950, between Slussen and the southern suburb of Hökarängen. Today the network has 100 stations, and Region Stockholm says 94 of them have artistic design, which is why it calls the metro the world's longest art exhibition. Tip

For a first ride, buy a 75-minute ticket in the SL app and use the three main lines, which all meet at T-Centralen. The wider system is covered in the guide to urban transport.

What may differ

Each line has its own opening year: the green line in 1950, the red line in 1964 and the blue line in 1975.

Common misconception

All Stockholm metro lines were dug as tunnels from the start.

What actually happens

According to SVT, the green line was built on old tramway routes, and Region Stockholm says the blue line was the first line built entirely in tunnel.
