How do you change your phone number in Sweden?

How a number change works, what it costs and what to know first.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

You change your Swedish phone number by asking your operator for a new one, and Comviq says the change is free, takes up to 24 hours and keeps your SIM card. Other operators have their own routines, and a Comviq prepaid card without a personnummer cannot change number.

Why

  1. Comviq says a number change is free of charge and takes up to 24 hours before it is completed.
  2. According to Comviq, you do not need to change SIM card, an unpaid invoice must be paid first, and voicemail messages disappear.
  3. PTS says you can take your mobile number with you when you switch operator, so changing operator does not force a new number.

Details

At Comviq you can move to a new or a reserved number by asking customer service, preferably in the chat. If you only want a different operator and not a different number, see the number portability rules on PTS. Operators are listed under telecom and internet providers in Stockholm.

Tip

Tell your bank, employer and contacts about the new number before the change, and save any voicemail messages first, because Comviq says they are deleted. Check your operator's own page for its routine.

What may differ

Comviq says a number change must be verified with BankID, so a prepaid card without a Swedish personnummer cannot change number; instead you can buy a new starter pack, which comes with a new number.

Common misconception

Changing your number means buying a new SIM card and paying a fee.

What actually happens

Comviq says the change is free and that you do not need to change SIM card.
