Should data roaming be on or off in Sweden?
What data roaming means and when the setting matters.
Short answer
Data roaming only matters when your phone uses another operator's network, so a Swedish plan used inside Sweden does not need it. A visitor with a foreign SIM must switch it on to use data on a Swedish network, and inside the EU and EEA that is charged at home prices under the roaming rules.
Why
- Tre says roaming means using your subscription outside Sweden, so the setting does not come into play for a Swedish plan used at home.
- According to Samsung, data roaming is when your phone uses a mobile network that is not owned by your network provider, and the provider may charge extra for it.
- According to Your Europe, the EU roam like at home rules apply in the EU and the EEA, and other countries are not covered by them.
Details
Apple places the setting under Cellular Data Options in Settings. Tele2 says to keep roaming on in EU and EEA countries to use your data package, and Comviq says you normally need not turn it off there. For other trip costs, see what a trip to Sweden costs.
Tip
Before you travel outside the EU and EEA, ask your own operator what data costs or buy a local data plan, which Apple also suggests. Operators in Sweden are listed under telecom and internet providers in Stockholm.
What may differ
Outside the EU and EEA the advice flips: Tele2 suggests turning roaming off temporarily before you travel because costs are often high, and Comviq advises turning off data roaming to avoid variable foreign prices unless you buy a package.
Common misconception
Data roaming in Europe always costs extra.
What actually happens
Your Europe says that inside the EU and EEA the roam like at home regime applies, so calls, texts and data cost the same as at home, with a fair use limit on data and a surcharge only in limited cases.
