How do you write a Swedish phone number with the country code?

The country code, the zero you drop and examples for mobiles and landlines.

Short answer

Write a Swedish phone number as +46 followed by the number without its leading zero, so 070-123 45 67 becomes +46 70 123 45 67. Telia's guide shows the same number as 0046 70 123 45 67, and for a landline the zero of the area code is dropped too.

Why

  1. According to PTS, Sweden's country code is 46, and the zero in front of Swedish numbers is the national (trunk) prefix.
  2. Telia says that to call Sweden you dial 0046, and gives the example that 070-123 45 67 becomes 0046 70 123 45 67.
  3. PTS lists the mobile ranges 70, 72, 73, 76 and 79 with a fixed length of 9 digits, which is what remains after the country code.

Details

A Stockholm landline such as 08-123 45 67 becomes 0046 8 123 45 67 in Telia's example, because 8 is the area code for Stockholm in the PTS numbering plan. Emergency calls use 112, see the emergency number in Sweden, and operators are listed under telecom and internet providers in Stockholm.

Tip

Save your contacts in the +46 format, so the numbers also work when your phone is on a foreign network.

What may differ

Calling out of Sweden works the other way round: Telia says to dial 00, the country code, then the area code without its first zero and the number. Mobile broadband and machine-to-machine numbers in the 71 series have 13 digits, according to PTS.

Common misconception

You keep the zero after the country code, as in +46 070 123 45 67.

What actually happens

PTS describes the zero as the national trunk prefix, and Telia's example drops it: 070-123 45 67 becomes 0046 70 123 45 67.
