How do you use your Swedish mobile plan abroad?
EU roaming, prices outside the EU, calls to Sweden and spending limits.
Short answer
In other EU and EEA countries you can use your Swedish plan at home prices, subject to your operator's fair use limit. Outside the EU and EEA the prices are not regulated, so check your operator's price list or buy a data package before you travel.
Why
- According to Your Europe, roam like at home also applies in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, operators may apply a fair use policy on data, and other countries are not covered.
- Telekområdgivarna says using a Swedish subscription outside the EU usually costs significantly more, that these prices are not regulated and that the operator can charge any price.
- According to the European Commission, calls from one EU country to another are capped at EUR 0.19 per minute and EUR 0.06 per SMS excluding VAT, and the cap covers mobile numbers.
Details
Comviq gives an example of the fair use limit: at most 20 GB of a 50 GB package needs to be included for use in the EU. The EU cap covers calls made from an EU country, and the Commission page does not set prices for calls from outside the EU, so a caller there should ask their own operator. For travel documents inside the EU, see travelling within the EU without a passport, and see planning and entry to Sweden for the trip itself.
Tip
Check your spending cap before you leave: Telekområdgivarna says operators must set a cost cap of EUR 50 unless you agree otherwise, but the information can be delayed, so do not rely on it triggering instantly.
What may differ
Ships, aircraft and areas near non-EU borders can connect your phone to networks the EU rules do not cover. Telekområdgivarna advises turning the phone off near non-EU borders and on boats and planes unless Wi-Fi is offered.
Common misconception
Roaming in the EU means unlimited data at home price.
What actually happens
Your Europe says operators may apply a fair use policy, and the limit can be lower than your domestic data allowance; Comviq gives 20 GB of a 50 GB package as an example.
