Where is 5G available in Stockholm?
What is known about 5G in Stockholm and how to check your address.
Short answer
Telia launched Sweden's first large public 5G network in Stockholm in 2020, and Telia says 90 percent of the population could connect to its 5G in April 2024. PTS reported that 90 percent of Swedish households had 5G coverage in October 2023, and operators' coverage maps show 5G by address.
Why
- According to Telia (press release of 11 April 2024), it launched Sweden's first large public 5G network in Stockholm in 2020.
- According to PTS, 90 percent of Swedish households had 5G coverage in October 2023, up from 57 percent a year earlier, and 67 percent in sparsely populated areas.
- Telia's coverage map lets you search an address and see coverage for 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G, and PTS advises comparing each operator's coverage map online.
Details
No official page checked gives a coverage figure for Stockholm alone, so the address-level maps are the way to find out. Telia says you need a 5G-compatible phone, router or other device and a subscription that includes 5G. For companies that sell mobile plans, see the directory of telecom and internet providers in Stockholm, and if your phone has no signal, emergency calls are covered in whether you can call 112 without a SIM card.
Tip
Search your exact address in the operator's coverage map, then measure real speeds with the Bredbandskollen app: its Surfkartan map can show measured 5G speeds by operator.
What may differ
Coverage inside a building can differ from outdoors: PTS suggests finding a spot at home with better coverage, usually near a window. The figures above are national, not figures for Stockholm alone.
Common misconception
5G is only available in big city centres like Stockholm.
What actually happens
PTS reported that 67 percent of households in sparsely populated areas had 5G coverage in October 2023, up from 29 percent in 2022, although Telekområdgivarna describes 5G coverage as still limited outside larger cities.
