Short answer

Adding up Konsumentverket's 2026 figures gives about SEK 8,400 a month for one adult aged 25 to 50, before housing, travel, dental care and medicine. The figures cover food, clothes, phone, internet, electricity and other everyday items. Rent comes on top: SCB reports an average of SEK 9,528 a month for a three-room apartment in 2026.

Why

  1. Konsumentverket estimates food for one adult aged 25 to 50 at SEK 2,730 a month when all meals are cooked at home.
  2. According to Konsumentverket, other individual costs for that age group are SEK 2,140 a month and shared household costs for one person are SEK 3,530.
  3. According to SCB, the average monthly rent in 2026 is SEK 5,640 for one room, SEK 7,742 for two rooms and SEK 9,528 for three rooms.

Details

The SEK 8,400 is the sum of the three Konsumentverket figures (2,730 + 2,140 + 3,530), not a number the agency publishes itself. Konsumentverket says the calculations are examples based on estimates and cover about 40 percent of a household's costs, and that housing, travel, dental care and medicine are left out. The shared costs include home insurance, household electricity, water and sewage, internet and mobile subscriptions. SCB reports that rents rose by 3.3 percent on average in 2026. Costs for a short visit are covered in budget and prices in Sweden.

Tip

Use the figures as a starting point and replace them with your own costs where you have them, as Konsumentverket advises. For stays without a residence permit, see how long you can stay in Sweden without a visa.

What may differ

The total depends on age, household size and where you live: shared costs rise from SEK 3,530 for one person to SEK 4,390 for two, and a three-room apartment in Greater Stockholm averages SEK 10,600 a month against SEK 9,528 nationally.
