Where do I get a tax-free refund at Arlanda, and when does it open?
Where the refund counters are, their hours and what Swedish Customs requires before you leave.
Short answer
At Arlanda you claim a tax-free refund at the Global Blue or Planet counters, or at Forex, but your tax-free receipt must be stamped before you leave Sweden. Global Blue counters in Terminal 5 are open daily 05:00 to 19:00 before security and 06:00 to 20:00 after security. Swedish Customs has a service point in the Terminal 5 arrivals hall.
Why
- Swedish Customs says you must have your tax-free receipt stamped before you leave Sweden, for example at the airport, and that Sweden must be your last stop in the EU.
- Planet Tax Free lists a Planet Desk in the Terminal 5 departure area before security (daily 05:00–20:00) and Forex counters airside in Terminal 5 (04:30–21:00) and Terminal 2 (05:00–20:00).
- Swedavia says the Global Blue counters are in the Terminal 5 departure hall before security (05:00–19:00) and in the Marketplace after security (06:00–20:00).
Details
Swedish Customs says the goods must be worth at least SEK 200 including VAT and must leave the EU before the end of the third month after the month of purchase. If the counters are closed, Swedavia says you can post your Global Blue forms in the Terminal 5 post box, after they have a customs stamp. Tip
Swedish Customs asks you to show the item you bought at the stamping point, so keep it in your hand baggage until the receipt is stamped, and allow extra time because stamping can take a while.
What may differ
Refunds are for people who live outside the EU and Norway and are leaving the EU. Swedish Customs says that if you are registered within the EU you cannot shop tax-free or have receipts stamped. Planet lists cash fees at Forex that depend on the refund amount, while its desk lists non-cash refunds with no fee.
Common misconception
You get the refund by showing the receipt.
What actually happens
Swedish Customs says you must also show the item you bought, the shop receipt, your travel documents and your passport at the stamping point, and Sweden must be your last stop in the EU.
