How does duty free work when flying out of Sweden?

What airport shops sell at duty free prices, age limits and the allowances for your return.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Swedavia says Arlanda sells spirits, wine, champagne and tobacco at duty free prices to travellers whose final destination is outside the EU. Perfume, cosmetics and confectionery are sold at duty free prices to all travellers, while travellers to EU destinations pay the same price for tobacco as in town. You must be over 20 to buy alcohol and over 18 to buy tobacco.

Why

  1. According to Swedavia, spirits, wine and champagne are at duty free prices when departing for a destination outside the EU.
  2. Swedavia says perfume and cosmetics are at duty free prices for all travellers when departing and arriving.
  3. Swedish Customs says that goods you carry home from outside the EU are free of duty and tax up to SEK 5,000 by plane or ferry, with separate allowances for alcohol and tobacco.

Details

Buying at duty free prices does not remove the allowances when you return. Coming home from outside the EU, Swedish Customs allows 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified wine, 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer, and 200 cigarettes, provided you were abroad at least 20 hours or arrive on a commercial flight. Goods above the allowance must be declared in the red lane.

Tip

Check the rules of your destination country before you buy, since each country sets its own limits for what you may bring in.

What may differ

People who live outside the EU can claim back Swedish VAT on goods they take out of the EU, if Sweden is their last EU stop and each purchase is at least SEK 200 including VAT. People registered within the EU cannot use this scheme.
