How do I renew a Swedish passport from abroad?

Applying and collecting a passport at a Swedish embassy.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Swedish citizens living abroad can apply for a passport at some Swedish embassies, and most embassies can also hand over a passport applied for elsewhere. You need a Swedish personal identity number or a coordination number to book. Delivery to an embassy can take longer, and pickup costs about SEK 200 extra per document.

Why

  1. According to the Swedish Police, a Swedish citizen living abroad can apply for a passport or national ID card at some Swedish embassies, and collect it at most of them.
  2. The Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC says you cannot schedule a passport appointment without a coordination number or a personal ID number.
  3. The Swedish Police say it can take longer to deliver a travel document to a Swedish embassy abroad, and the embassy in the USA recommends applying well in advance.

Details

Each Swedish mission sets its own booking routine, so look for your country on swedenabroad.se. The embassy in the USA says the passport must be picked up in person and cannot be mailed, and the embassy in London says it can renew passports for a limited number of Swedish citizens. A Swedish citizen abroad can also call the Police on +46 77 114 14 00 for help with booking.

Tip

Start well before the passport runs out, because delivery to an embassy can take longer and the embassy verifies your citizenship every time you apply.

What may differ

The rules depend on the country you live in and on the Swedish mission there. The embassy in London says that, wherever you live, you can apply to the Swedish Police when you are in Sweden and ask for the passport to be sent to the embassy for collection.
