How much alcohol and tobacco can you bring into Sweden from outside the EU?
Duty-free allowances for alcohol and tobacco, and the conditions for using them.
Short answer
From outside the EU you can bring 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified wine, 4 litres of wine, 16 litres of beer and 200 cigarettes duty free. The alcohol allowance applies if you have been abroad at least 20 hours or arrive on a commercial flight. You must be 20 for alcohol and 18 for tobacco. This topic is for adults aged 18 and over.
Why
- According to Swedish Customs, the alcohol allowance from outside the EU is 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified wine, 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer.
- Swedish Customs gives the tobacco allowance as 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 grams of smoking tobacco or 250 grams of other tobacco, and you can mix them proportionally.
- Swedish Customs says the alcohol allowance applies provided you have been abroad for at least 20 hours or travel on a commercial flight.
Details
If you have been abroad for less than 20 hours and do not arrive by commercial flight, the tobacco allowance is lower: 40 cigarettes, 20 cigars or cigarillos, or 100 grams of other tobacco products. Snus, e-liquid and other nicotine products are limited by value instead: goods worth up to SEK 5,000 for air and ferry travellers and SEK 3,500 for others, counted together with everything else you bought. Anything above the allowance must be declared in the red lane and taxed.
Tip
If you are unsure whether you are within the allowance, choose the red lane: Swedish Customs says you then do not risk being suspected of smuggling.
What may differ
After Brexit the United Kingdom counts as a non-EU country, and Swedish Customs says that in principle the same rules apply, with some exceptions. Åland and the Canary Islands also follow the non-EU amounts for alcohol.
