Can you bring prescription medicines into Sweden?
How to show the medicine is yours, how much you may bring and when stricter rules apply.
Short answer
You can bring prescription medicines into Sweden if you can show they are yours, for example with a prescription, a pharmacy label or a doctor's certificate. From an EEA country you may bring up to one year's use, and from outside the EEA up to three months' use. Narcotic-classified medicines have separate rules.
Why
- According to Swedish Customs, when you travel to Sweden with medicine you must be able to show it is yours.
- Swedish Customs accepts a prescription, a pharmacy label or a doctor's certificate as proof that the medicine is for your own use.
- According to 1177, you may bring medicines for up to one year's use from an EEA country and up to three months' use from a country outside the EEA.
Details
A doctor's note is one way to show the medicine is yours, but a prescription or a pharmacy label is also accepted. The Swedish Medical Products Agency says you can take your medicines with you as long as they are for you or your accompanying pet. If your medicines follow the Agency's rules, Swedish Customs says you can use the green or blue lane, which means nothing to declare.
Tip
Keep the prescription, pharmacy label or certificate with you, so you can show it if customs asks.
What may differ
Narcotic-classified medicines, such as certain painkillers, sleeping pills and some ADHD medicines, and doping-classified medicines, such as anabolic steroids, testosterone and growth hormone, may only be brought for medical purposes and personal use. The amount depends on the substance list, where you travel from and whether you live in Sweden, and a Schengen certificate is needed in some cases.
