Can you bring food, meat and dairy into Sweden?
The rules for food from EU and non-EU countries, and the exceptions that apply.
Short answer
From other EU countries you may bring any type of food for personal use, but meat and dairy products from outside the EU are generally not allowed. There are exceptions, such as animal products from Norway and Iceland, up to 2 kg of honey and eggs, and up to 20 kg of fish. Swedish Customs stops banned products.
Why
- According to the Swedish Board of Agriculture, you may bring in all types of food from other EU countries as long as it is for personal use.
- Your Europe says that from outside the EU you must not bring any meat or dairy products.
- The Swedish Board of Agriculture lists exceptions: animal-origin food from San Marino, Andorra, Iceland, Norway, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and fish up to 20 kg in total or the weight of one fish, whichever is higher.
Details
From outside the EU, honey, eggs, insects, snails and similar products are limited to 2 kg in total, and infant formula and special medical food to 2 kg if the product needs no refrigeration and is unopened. Fresh fruit and vegetables from outside the EU generally need a phytosanitary certificate, with exceptions such as bananas, pineapples and coconuts. If a banned product is found in your luggage or in a parcel, Swedish Customs stops it, and what is not sent back to the sender is destroyed.
Tip
If you are unsure about a product, leave it at home: the Swedish Board of Agriculture says you must avoid bringing in a product you are unsure about, and it does not answer questions about individual products.
What may differ
Norway is outside the customs union: animal-origin food is treated like EU food, but large amounts may incur a customs fee, and plant-based food from Norway follows the non-EU rules. From the Faroe Islands and Greenland, meat and dairy products are limited to 10 kg in total.
