How do you claim compensation for a delayed flight from Sweden?

Delay limit, amounts, who to claim from and where to turn if the airline says no.

Short answer

Send your claim to the airline first: under EU rules a delay of 3 hours or more on arrival can give EUR 250, 400 or 600, depending on distance. If the airline says no, the Swedish Consumer Complaints Board (ARN) can assess whether you are entitled, according to Konsumentverket, and filing with ARN costs SEK 150.

Why

  1. According to Your Europe, you are entitled to compensation if you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late, unless the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances.
  2. Your Europe gives EUR 250 for flights of 1,500 km or less, EUR 400 for longer flights within the EU and for other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km, and EUR 600 for flights over 3,500 km outside the EU with a delay of 4 hours or more.
  3. Konsumentverket says to always contact the airline to make your claim, and Your Europe says to complain to the national authority if you get no reply within 2 months.

Details

The airline has to prove that extraordinary circumstances caused the delay, and most technical problems and strikes by the airline's own staff do not count, according to Your Europe. Konsumentverket offers a free flight calculator that helps you find out what you may be entitled to. If you re-route and still arrive late, the compensation may be halved. Tip

Write to the airline as soon as you can, keep your booking and boarding documents and the airline's delay information, and use Konsumentverket's flight calculator before you file. Read about cover for travel problems in travel insurance for a trip to Sweden.

What may differ

The amount depends on the flight distance and the delay at arrival. A flight is covered if it is within the EU on any airline or leaves the EU for a non-EU country on any airline; flights arriving in the EU from outside are covered only on an EU airline.

Common misconception

You get compensation for any delay at departure.

What actually happens

Your Europe says a departure delay generally gives rights to care and assistance, not compensation; the 3-hour limit is measured at your final destination.
