Where is passport control at Arlanda?
When you pass passport control, who does it, what Swedavia's Terminal 2 map shows and what to carry.
Short answer
Passport control at Arlanda applies when you travel to or from a country outside the Schengen area, and the Swedish Police carry out the border check. Swedavia's Terminal 2 map shows passport control on Level 3. The Swedavia pages checked do not say where it is in Terminal 5, so follow the signs.
Why
- According to the Swedish Police, the Police must check people entering or leaving Sweden from or to non-Schengen countries, regardless of citizenship.
- Swedavia says that within Schengen there will usually be no border check on arrival, but that for travel to countries outside the EU border checks are carried out and you must be able to show a valid passport.
- Swedavia says EU and Swedish citizens follow the signs marked EU passport, and that the Entry/Exit System, in use since 12 October 2025, does not apply to EU citizens.
Details
The Swedish Police are responsible for checking people at the border, while Swedish Customs controls goods separately. For what EES means for non-EU visitors, see what the Entry/Exit System is and how it affects travel to Sweden; for the rules on travelling inside Europe, see whether Sweden has open borders or border checks.
Tip
Always carry a valid passport or national ID card on flights abroad, even within Schengen, because Swedavia recommends it and some airlines require it. See also planning and entry to Sweden.
What may differ
EU citizens use the EU passport lane, while non-EU citizens are covered by the Entry/Exit System. Some countries also require your passport to be valid for a set period after entry.
Common misconception
There is no passport control at Arlanda on flights within Schengen, so you do not need to carry a passport.
What actually happens
Swedavia says that although there is usually no border check on arrival within Schengen, you should always bring a valid passport or ID, and some airlines still ask for a passport or national ID card for the flight.
