Short answer

SJ refunds 25% of the ticket price for a delay of 60 minutes and 50% for 120 minutes on trains with a route of 150 km or more. On shorter routes the limits are 20, 40 and 60 minutes, with 50%, 75% and 100% refunded, according to SJ's 2024 service quality report. Claims go through a form on SJ's website.

Why

  1. According to SJ's 2024 service quality report, a delay of 60 minutes or more on a train running 150 km or more gives 25% of the ticket price, and 120 minutes or more gives 50%.
  2. SJ states that on trains running under 150 km, a delay of 20 minutes gives 50% of the ticket price, 40 minutes gives 75% and 60 minutes gives 100%.
  3. Konsumentverket (the Swedish Consumer Agency) says that routes of 15 mil (150 km) or longer are covered by the EU train regulation, and shorter routes by the Swedish law on public transport passengers' rights.

Details

SJ says the rules depend on the train's total route from first to last station, not on the distance you travel. On trains of 150 km or more SJ also offers food and drink assistance when a delay is expected to exceed 60 minutes, where practical. Your Europe says the railway must pay EU compensation within one month of your request. For cross-border trips by rail, see international buses and trains, and for ticket basics see how to buy SJ tickets.

Tip

Put your claim to the train company in writing and keep your ticket and booking number, because Konsumentverket says to contact the train company in writing so you can prove what you demanded. For the ticket types you can choose, see how to buy SJ tickets.

What may differ

Other train companies have their own claim rules: Snälltåget, for example, pays 25% for 60-119 minutes and 50% from 120 minutes, and requires a claim within two months.

Common misconception

You only get money back if the train is more than two hours late.

What actually happens

According to SJ, a delay of 60 minutes already gives 25% back on trains of 150 km or more, and on shorter routes the limit starts at 20 minutes.
